The New Daily Routine = Podcasts, Online Video, Social News
Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at 9:23AM Over the years I have noticed that my daily routine has changed a lot. It used to involve reading a newspaper, watching TV and listening to the radio. While I still do these things the way I do these have changed a lot.
I listen to my radio over the internet and tune into specific programs that I like. For example, I either listen to music over Pandora, local news programming on favorite local channels like KGO, I can get streaming video of normal newscasts and listen to those and watch them too, and now I have speciality programming like Leo Laporte's TWiT Live!
I also find that I receive my news differently as well. I love the different perspectives on a news story and having the various aggregators such as Google Reader and Feedly are perfect ways to catch all the perspectives that I care about such as the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and local news feeds.
What has really been of value lately has is the incorporation of people that I consider experts into my news such as Leo Laporte, Veronica Belmont, Patrick Norton, John C. Dvorak, Jason Calacanis, Kevin Rose, Guy Kawasaki and Robert Scoble to name a few. These individuals help bring new products and services to my attention, issues that may be interesting, or just great humor! Also there are other professionals that I follow to provide more specific insight into certain fields such as Jacqui Poindexter who is an expert resume writer whose insights into what professionals need to keep in mind are highly useful or Jeremy Epstein a professional who does and knows a lot about community-driven marketing. By including these sources I can get new perspectives, share insights, and keep on top of some of the most important subjects that I care about.
Finally video and audio podcasts round out my day. I can catch up to topics ranging from technology to art and the like. For example I follow the HT Guys for the latest indepth news on living High Definition, many of the Revision3 shows like Tekzilla, HD Nation, App Judgement, Scam School and Hak5 (man I miss those days of hacking). There are of course the Leo Laporte This Week series such as In Tech and the like as well. And many other more focused podcasts far too numerous to mention.
Now this may sound like a lot but to be honest I do not always watch everything back to back. On the long commute to work, a wait at the DMV or doctor, or heck even in the long lunch time lines, there are always a few minutes to squeeze in a little reading, listening or watching time.
I still love the feel of an old classic book or newspaper from time to time. Especially when I am disconnected. However, the modern era is so focused on moving so quickly and staying connected that my means of absorbing information digitally has changed by creating a series of value added filters of interest that help me understand the major issues and subjects that matter to me.
