SimplyHired.com Trends - Interesting Service
Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 2:07PM Often times when speaking with technical professionals invariably there arises the question about how the overall employment market is doing. Such discussions are not uncommon since many professionals use industry trends to not only keep abreast of what technologies are rising and falling, but additionally as a means of planning their careers.
One of the more useful resources I have used recently happens to be the trending tool from SimplyHired.com. While not comprehensive as the data is only from SimplyHired, the trending charts do provide helpful information. One example that I use for hands-on developers is usually for languages which SimplyHired can return as a spiffy little graph:
| Perl, Python, Php, Ruby, Java, Scala, C++, C, Objective C trends | Perl jobs | Python jobs | Php jobs | Ruby jobs | Java jobs | Scala jobs | C++ jobs | C jobs | Objective C jobs |
This graph displays the percentage of jobs with your search terms anywhere in the job listing. Since February 2008, the following has occurred:
- Perl jobs increased 99%
- Python jobs increased 194%
- Php jobs increased 174%
- Ruby jobs increased 239%
- Java jobs increased 83%
- Scala jobs increased 103%
- C++ jobs increased 14%
- C jobs increased 50%
- Objective C jobs increased 137%
However that is not the only perspective one can take. Another one that I use for specialists such as those with Oracle skills involves some of those specific technologies:
This graph displays the percentage of jobs with your search terms anywhere in the job listing. Since February 2008, the following has occurred:
- Oracle Dba jobs increased 90%
- Oracle Business Intelligence jobs increased 85%
- Oracle Bpel jobs increased 132%
- Oracle Fusion jobs increased 24%
- Oracle Siebel jobs decreased 20%
- Oracle Peoplesoft jobs decreased 27%
In this example some inferences that can be drawn are that core DBA skills are doing well with an increase in business intelligence and SOA skillsets such as BPEL. Certain acquired products such as Siebel and Peoplesoft are not doing as well but that is expected as those products fall into the larger Oracle brand.
SimplyHired also has some of their own queries for trends that they provide. These usually address some of the more common trends such as the one called "Management Trends":
| Entry Level, Manager, Director, Vp, Executive trends | Entry Level jobs | Manager jobs | Director jobs | Vp jobs | Executive jobs |
This graph displays the percentage of jobs with your search terms anywhere in the job listing. Since February 2008, the following has occurred:
- Entry Level jobs increased 21%
- Manager jobs increased 3%
- Director jobs increased 14%
- Vp jobs decreased 20%
- Executive jobs increased 13%
Overall SimplyHired.com trends are a good way to supplement existing information about the industry so that technical professionals can evaluate their employment prospects. However, while offering great information, the trends by themselves should never be used as the sole input into career planning. Rather they can be used as a supplemental guide and information point.
What I have often wondered is if other services such as LinkedIn or Dice would begin to offer similar trending tools for their users. Seeing the trends from various services would be quite helpful to professionals looking for a broader measure of employment prospects.
